History

The Scotch Game (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4) gets its name from a correspondence match between Edinburgh and London in 1824. It was revived in the 20th century by Garry Kasparov, who used it to surprise Karpov in their World Championship matches.

Play Style

Tactical and open. White immediately blasts open the center, avoiding the slow maneuvering of the Ruy Lopez or Italian. It leads to improved endgames for White if Black isn't careful.
